Examining the intersection of psychology and video games
I just wanted to share a website that posts interesting articles about examining the different aspects of video games, the act of playing games, and the decisions we make while playing video games. It’s all examined through the eyes of Jamie Madigan, who not only has a Ph.D in psychology but who is also an avid video game player.
I would like to try to get in touched (ha) with the gamer community on tumblr. I think they best way (and most dangerous) is to share opinions of what I think about games. I will start with this Top 5 FPS games.
I will just like to remind everybody that this is my top 5, there are plenty of other FPS that i haven’t played. So this list is a top 5 of what i have played.
I will also like to start of with an Honorable Mention that i didn’t really feel like would, fit with this list.
Honorable Mention :
Condemned: Criminal Origins:
I would like to put this on my list of First Person Shooter but since this game is really a First Person Melee with minimum shooting involved, I feel like it was appropriate to not put it on the list but i would like to tell people to always try this game! The Shooting part of this game leaves you hanging on to every bullet you have available. Never really having a full clip of ammo you usually throw away the gun and start grabbing the closes metal pipe you can before being hit from behind by a crazy drug addict.
Alright now to get this list started!
#5 - Unreal Championship
Probably the first FPS game i really got addicted to because it was on of Xbox first online video game. It wasn’t just that though. This console version of the PC Unreal Tournament wasn’t as fast but on the console playing online you will be seeing bullets flying, explosions is mid air, and lightning strikes hitting team mates. With most weapons having a primary shooting and a secondary shooting. Some even having a third shoot if you combine both the secondary and primary. I was very much obsessed with this game and deserves a spot on my list.
#4 - Bioshock
Again, this is a list of games I’ve played. With the tonics the game offers and even though there isn’t as much weapons, there are plenty of bullets. There are tons of ways to destroy your Enemies. Every shoot feels like you are doing some damage to Enemies. The environment puts you on your toes with the flickering lights and people appearing in the dark it makes you want to try to save your bullets, but you end up shooting randomly in the rooms hoping to hit a body.
#3 - Halo: Reach
I put Halo: Reach but really I’m just putting every halo game on here. Can we all just agree that, while halo is being over played with a new halo game almost every year, Halo: Combat Evolved was truly a game changer. The controls just set the standard and the local play was perfect. The story of the game doesn’t do much, but the universe is amazing. Reach was one of the tops. Sure most if not everybody knew what was going to happen, i guess it was WHEN it was going to happen that excited me. The core game itself did add some interesting “new” features like Sprint and Jet Packs to the single player and multiplayer.
#2 - Fallout 3
How can i not put this game on my list. Fallout 3 brings a first person shooter in to an amazing post apocalyptic world. While trying to find your father you meet various of characters, mutant creatures and surprisingly beautiful sceneries. V.A.T.S (Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System) is probably the best FPS tech i have seen. At first i assumed that this V.A.T.S. will take over the game and i never had to shoot a gun for myself, but never at one point in the game did i ever feel like that. It’s what kind of gun i am using, position, enemy that determines the percentage of if i could hit the enemy. Also the game has many Role Playing aspects to it. with Experience points, Dialogue choices, Leveling up, Attribute points and probably the part that really defines your character, The perk system. Each perk giving you a heads up on the opponents, being able to persuade a specific sex to shooting an enemie which causes them to blow up.
#1 - Borderlands
This game i believe is the best First Person Shooter out there for me. If we are talking about a Shooting shooter that is also First Person, This is the game! So much weapons, So many weapons! yes i know they aren’t exactly “different” just the same weapons with different specs, yes i know. Because of that though, i was always excited to see a new weapon coming up or falling off a dead enemy hoping it would be the color coded for the meaning of “Rare”. I always love to switch around weapons. Each would do it’s own thing and even when a statue was better then another gun it probably didn’t shoot or perhaps reload the way you wanted it to. It was a very unique style looking game that just always felt like an arcade game. I just sometimes wanted to put in a quarter when i die to try again. Again, also with a Role Playing status with Skill Trees and leveling ups. Giving your own character a special stamp of You on it. Since this is a top 5 First Person Shooter i feel that the shooting part aspect should be the most important part so Borderlands would be my first. Since Shooting, Guns and Killing are such a huge part in the game and a huge part of First Person Shooter.
